How Scalater Saved a Client’s Shopify Store

Hello, I’m Yoa, one of the developers at Scalater. Today, I want to share an exciting success story that highlights how we helped a client keep their Shopify store running despite unforeseen challenges. This case showcases the importance of innovation and the ability to create customized solutions that a developer must cultivate.

The Problem: Unexpected Shopify Store Shutdown

Our client operated a Shopify store with a business model based on product subscriptions. Without warning, Shopify shut down their store, leaving them without sales and access to customer data. Such situations not only affect immediate sales but can also damage the company’s reputation and customer trust. The client needed a solution that ensured the continuity of their store regardless of future occurrences.

The Solution: Migration to WordPress with Automatic Backup

To address this issue, we migrated the client’s Shopify store to WordPress using WooCommerce Subscription. However, it was not a typical migration. We designed a continuous backup system that ensured that even if Shopify shut down the store again, the client would have a complete and functional copy of their store ready to operate on WordPress.

This system consisted of three parts:

  1. Original Shopify Store: Continued operating while the backup was made.
  2. Backup Server: Automatically stored all relevant Shopify data, including products, orders, subscriptions, and customer profiles.
  3. Migration Store on WordPress: Received data from the backup server, functioning as a mirror of the Shopify store, including the design.

Challenges in Subscription Migration

The most complex part of this project was migrating the subscriptions with all payment profiles intact. Most migrations focus on products and customer data, but in this case, it was crucial to keep subscriptions active without requiring customers to re-enter their payment information, which could cause distrust and a poor user experience.

Our team worked tirelessly to create a system that allowed the automatic transfer of these subscription data from Shopify to WooCommerce. Thus, if Shopify shut down the store again, our client could continue processing subscriptions without interruptions, all with just one click!

Migrating Authorize.Net Subscriptions

Another significant challenge was migrating Authorize.Net, the client’s payment method in their Shopify store. This presented new challenges, but I’ll tell you more about that in the next article, so don’t miss it and follow us on our social media: LinkedIn or Instagram. Spoiler: we met all requirements, and the client only has to press a button.

Results

Implementing this solution had a significant positive impact on our client’s business:

  • Business Continuity: The client now has a backup store ready to go live at any moment, reducing the risk of sales interruptions.
  • Customer Trust: Keeping subscriptions active and payment methods intact in a transparent way for the brand’s customers.
  • Ownership and Control: With the store on WordPress, the client owns their server and code, eliminating dependency on Shopify’s terms and conditions.

Conclusion

At Scalater, we specialize in creating customized solutions that ensure our clients’ business continuity. This success story demonstrates our ability to handle complex challenges and our dedication to providing solutions that not only solve immediate problems but also prevent future issues.
